Bikes for Neighbors
Increasing personal freedom and mobility with the help of bicycles.
For many of our community members, a bicycle is more than a way to get around—it’s freedom, reliability, and access to daily life.
Launched in 2015 as Bicycles for Refugees, the program was restructured in 2020 and renamed Bikes for Neighbors to serve a wider array of people across Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. The name is inspired by the city’s welcoming spirit and the familiar signs that read: “No matter where you are from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor.”
How the Program Works
We partner with local organizations to connect with people who can benefit from a bike for commuting to work, school, appointments, or shopping. Every participant receives a donated, refurbished bicycle along with a helmet, lock, and pump. We also provide ongoing support, skills practice, and one-on-one help for anyone who needs it.
Since its launch, the program has provided dozens of people with bicycles and the confidence to use them for daily life.
