Trail Volunteer Day – Sunday, August 17

What:
Help us give some love to two of our favorite National Forest rides – Bridge Hollow and Braley Pond trails. We’ll be clearing brush, improving drainage, and making sure these backcountry gems are in top shape for all riders, hikers, and equestrians. No prior trail work experience needed — just bring your energy and a willingness to get a little dirty.

Where:
Meet at Mountain House Picnic Area (George Washington National Forest). We’ll carpool/caravan from there to the work sites.

When:
📅 Sunday, August 17
⏰ Meet at 8:00 AM sharp . You could meet us on trail later if you like.

Why:
Without regular upkeep, they become overgrown, eroded, and harder to enjoy. Your few hours of work help keep them rideable and beautiful for everyone — and you’ll get that sweet satisfaction of riding a trail you helped maintain.

How:

• Bring water, snacks, sturdy shoes, and work gloves if you have them.
• We’ll provide tools and guidance.
• Expect a mix of hiking and working along the trail.
• Plan for variable weather — it’s August in the mountains but likely HOT!

🌲 Bonus: Fresh mountain air, good company, and the chance to explore trails you might not have seen in a while.

• Pace: Super casual, no-drop ride with regrouping spots along the way.
• Length: Typically 1-1.5 hours and we will often cover 4-6 miles.
• Ride Surface: This is a mountain bike ride so plan for dirt singletrack trails with some rock.
• Regroup Points During Ride? Yes. The Massanutten Western Slope Trails offer lots of options for regrouping and course changes depending on where and what the group wants to ride.
• Post-Ride: Bring a chair, snacks, and a beverage for socializing after if you like!

Enter through the main gate (by the horses – the next entrance down the hill from the Western Slope parking lot) and follow the “trail work” signs straight up the road. Take a left on the second gravel road, go past the intersection “Running Cedar”, there will be a truck there. You can park your car where the new climbing trail crosses the lower gravel road.

🙋 HOW: Sign up, bring a friend, wear work clothes, and we’ll provide the tools and good vibes. No experience is needed. Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes; bring gloves if you have them.

These evenings are fun and productive and a chance to give back to the land that gives us so much.

The Big Dig Day is a volunteer trail-building event on the Western Slope of Massanutten. Volunteers will work together to build new trails and/or maintain existing trails.

This is more than a volunteer day! It will be a fun, family-friendly day in the woods with friends old and new! Bonus… you can earn your annual Western Slope trail pass volunteer hours in a single day!
Prior trail experience is NOT necessary.

On-site training and instruction will allow volunteers to work safely, confidently, and effectively.

• What: A celebration of our volunteers while we work on improving the Western Slope trails.
• Where: Massanutten’s Western Slope near Keezletown
• Where do I park? Parking will be in the main parking lot or the field near the pavilion. Please be aware that there is an event going on on the same day, and we will be sharing parking.
• When: Saturday, September 27, from 11 am to 3 pm
• What to wear: Sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants, gloves, and water!

We will get together at 11 am to go over a plan for the day and then break up into groups to work on project sites. We will have food ready at 3 pm for our post-event gathering and hangout.
We’ll grill burgers and have drinks for folks, and other snacks and food.

RSVPs ARE REQUIRED. Once you’ve signed up, you will receive email notifications with details about the day, including where we will meet. We need a headcount for food/drink and to give you some thank-you gifts.
