In 2023 we cut the ribbon on our most welcoming trail build to date and built a bridge! This project is a model for future expansions of trails on public lands. It shows how trails can be built with new visitors in mind and still be an exceptional experience.
Shenandoah Pixie Dust means building community through trails and leveraging community connections to make our public lands better for everyone.
Sometimes, it feels like these projects just happen in an explosion of awesome and out of thin air 🎉💥 But we wouldn’t be here without a dedicated and cohesive organization to play the long game. What is it that folks often miss?

Trails don’t build themselves and we wouldn’t be here without a dedicated and cohesive movement to play the long game. What is it that folks often miss?
☑️The 10-year process it took before the Forest Service said “YES.”
☑️The grant application process starting in 2018.
☑️The firm the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition hired to conduct the environmental review (in partnership with the Forest Service).
☑️The bid process to select a contractor.
☑️Many site visits to check in and manage the contractor.
☑️Grant paperwork and reimbursements.
☑️The storytelling needed to raise funds and excite volunteers.
☑️Countless meetings with Forest Service staff, engineers, and contractors.
☑️Volunteer days to build matching hours to offset the requisite cash needed to match the grants.

Ribbon Cutting for trails on Public Lands
🙌We celebrated trails so good that you want to share them with your friends and family. We celebrated trails that get more people into the woods where we can share our trails on public lands with our children, parents, and grandparents.
🕐We celebrated what it means to have a consistent voice working towards the big picture. While faces have changed, and many people have come and gone, the Bicycle Coalition and before that, the Shenandoah Mountain Bike Club has been a partner with the Forest Service since the mid-1990s. That matters.
