We believe that biking should be fun. We believe that change can be playful.
“Biking isn’t the end goal for everyone, but for now, it’s a critical step forward for these neighbors, connecting them to the community and opportunity.”

Join your neighbors at the free North Mason Street Block(s) Party. This new event will take place along North Mason Street, between Elizabeth Street and Gay Street, and include historical and educational displays about the area; tours of the Green Book House; nonprofits and vendors; music; Silent Disco; a police, transit, and fire department touch-a-truck area; games & activities hosted by Harrisonburg Parks & Recreation; community art and more! Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the event.
How can this activity take place on North Mason Street? We are closing the west side of Mason Street for a month to test out community-member-designed street improvements to slow traffic and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety on North Mason Street. We will have family friendly programming and activities in this space to bring the community together while encouraging you to experience the temporary street improvements and offer feedback.
The block party is part of the Harrisonburg Community Connectors Initiative, which seeks to work with Northeast Neighborhood community members and organizations to create a plan for guiding improvements and investment in the area.
The community’s team is led by the Northeast Neighborhood Association, Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance and City government. Intentional outreach to residents, businesses, and community groups in and surrounding the Northeast Neighborhood is taking place to empower individuals, families and organizations to share their stories and needs in order to create a Small Area Plan for the Northeast Neighborhood.
