The City of Harrisonburg wants to know what more can be and needs to be done to increase biking and walking in our community. This timely discussion was posted in tandem with the Fourth Annual Harrisonburg & Rockingham Bike-Walk Summit that was held last Friday 11/13. Since the Summit is held during a work day and we know that not everyone can attend we went ahead and posted a full recap on SVBCoalition.org but along the lines of inclusion, the City of Harrisonburg is seeking your input on their online forum BE Heard Harrisonburg. You can sign in with a new account or via your Facebook profile.

One of the top issues that we currently see on the website revolves around the lack of biking and walking connections at Skyline Middle School/ Smithland Elementary School. Biking and walking connections to schools seems to be at the the top of the priority list for our community. If you agree, disagree, or have another important project in mind please contribute to Be Heard Harrisonburg. The discussion closes on December 4th and we are curious to hear your ideas.join-the-discussion

Interested in the SVBC’s Top priorities for biking and walking in the city? Feel free to convey these on Be Heard Harrisonburg.

  • Construction of sidewalks along Country Club Road for a safe biking/walking connection to Skyline/Smithland schools
  • The construction of shared-use paths (greenways) to connect Hillandale Park to the High School and eventually the new elementary school on Garbers Church Road.
  • Constructing connecting paths around Thomas Harrison Middle School to include the “Cale Trail” that will create a path from Thomas Harrison to Westover Park.
  • Design, funding, and construction of Phase 2 for the Northend Greenway.

Here are the two prompt questions that you will find on Be Heard Harrisonburg:

  • What more can be done to encourage people to walk, bike, or take transit more?
  • When you were seeking a new location in the city for your business or a new home, what transportation factors were important to you? What features that Harrisonburg already has attracted you to put down your roots here?

Join the Discussion online and let the city know what you would like to see improved.
