The Shenandoah Valley Bike Coalition works to increase access to our public lands and outdoor spaces. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, regardless of their income or background.
That’s why we support the Community Gear Library! The CGL is a free lending library for outdoor gear located in the Massanutten Regional Library here in Harrisonburg, VA. The Community Gear Library is a new resource in the Shenandoah Valley dedicated to increasing access to the outdoors for all members of our diverse community. The Coalition and CGL both believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of spending time in nature, regardless of their income or background.
How does the Community Gear Library work?
The CGL is a free lending library for outdoor gear. They have a wide variety of gear available, including tents, sleeping bags, camping stoves, dishes, pots/pans, hiking poles, and child carrier backpacks. Family Camping Kits are available that include everything a family needs to go camping. You can borrow equipment for a week at a time, and you only need to have a Massanutten Regional Library card (available to anyone in Virginia or to counties bordering Virginia) and attend one of their information sessions. Why is the Community Gear Library important?
There are many barriers that can prevent people from spending time outdoors, such as cost, lack of transportation, and lack of access to gear. The Community Gear Library helps to eliminate these barriers by providing free gear and information to everyone in our community.
