The Fourth Annual Harrisonburg & Rockingham Bike-Walk Summit was a hit with our local elected representatives, city/county staff, JMU/EMU, and many of the wonderful volunteer advocates who make it all happen. For 2015 we enlisted the help of SVBC member Scott Wootten and his Adventure Seen Videos to create three short videos to help us recap some of the great biking and walking activity that has happened in our community over the past year.

Cindy Ferek has been an inspiration for many in our community as she uses bicycles to teach Drivers Education to High School students at Turner Ashby High School in Rockingham County. Cindy also received a $100,000 grant to build a model “road” or trail around the Turner Ashby campus for students and community members to walk and/or bike.

The first greenway in the Burg! Jim Baker from Public Works and Charlie King with JMU both help outline future goals to build a north-south greenway connection that will tie the Bluestone Trail through the JMU campus and eventually into downtown all the way to EMU with the Northend Greenway.

Hopefully you have heard about our robust Safe Routes to School Program that has successfully helped increase the number of students who bike or walk to school. With the help of Nathan Barge and Becky Johnston, the city schools have implemented all sorts of phenomenal events to increase biking and walking among the student population.
