Carl the Cougar invited us to join the Fall Walk and Roll to School Day bike bus on October 9th,so of course we were there!

Keister Elementary School has one of the Valley’s largest bike and walk turnouts, why is that?

Here are a few practices we’ve noticed that you can bring to your community and school:

Bike Bus Lessons

  • 1️⃣ Access to sidewalks and wider streets is the biggest. This is something not everyone across cities in the Valley has, and we continue to advocate for improved infrastructure in all areas. If this is something you are particularly passionate about and see an area for improvement, reach out to us so we can work together!

  • 2️⃣ EXTRA enthusiastic parent and teacher volunteers: Miss Imber showed up in the mascot costume (kids love it!!) and many parents take time in their morning to prioritize the family time and safe, active movement to school.

  • 3️⃣ Having a group chat to organize a pickup timeline and route helps coordinate efforts. If you want help setting this up, send us a message and we can share with you what we’ve learned from the parents who have made this bike bus possible. All credit to them 🙏🏼

  • 4️⃣ Pick a couple days a week, it doesn’t need to be every day. But two days a week that kids can look forward to makes it extra special.

This is a community effort! It was so sweet to see folks joining in on the bikes and walks, some not even taking kids to school, simply wanting to be a part of the fun. And fun it was 🚲

Note in the pictures from the Spring 2024 Ride and Roll to School Day: a full bike rack (they even need more! bikes were splayed across the lawn, against trees, anywhere there was free space), parent volunteers, mascot engagement and making a fun morning out of it outside before school starts.
