VDOT just released the Phase 1 Report of the Shenandoah Valley Rail with Trail Assessment—and it confirms what many of us already knew: adding rail back to the corridor comes with a sky-high price tag, tough terrain, and serious engineering hurdles.
Now’s our chance to remind decision-makers that the Shenandoah Rail Trail is the project this region needs.
📝 What’s in the Phase 1 Report?
The report dives into feasibility, cost, and construction of a rail with trail option—and yep, it’s as complicated (and expensive) as it sounds. Here are a few takeaways:
- ❗ 51% of the corridor needs costly engineering fixes just to make the combo happen.
- ❗ 40% of the route includes steep slopes, needing major earthwork and retaining walls.
- ❗ Building next to active freight lines means pricey steel bridge additions.
And there’s no guarantee that freight rail will ever return to the corridor.
