Western Slope Trail Plan
A Vision for World-Class Trails in the Shenandoah Valley
The Western Slope Trail Plan Launch is our bold, community-driven vision to enhance, expand, and protect the Western Slope of Massanutten Mountain trail network—one of the Shenandoah Valley’s most beloved outdoor destinations.
Whether you’re a mountain biker, trail runner, hiker, birdwatcher, or just someone who loves being in the woods, this plan lays the foundation for a more connected, sustainable, and inclusive future for outdoor recreation in our region.
What is the Western Slope Trail Plan?
The Western Slope Trail Plan is a long-term strategy developed by the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition, in collaboration with land managers, trail users, and local partners. The plan guides trail development and maintenance on Massanutten’s Western Slope, balancing recreation, conservation, and community needs.
Key goals of the plan include:
- Expanding the trail network to improve access and reduce congestion
- Creating purpose-built trails for all skill levels and user groups
- Enhancing connections to nearby towns, neighborhoods, and the Massanutten Resort
- Protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable trail-building practices
With over 30 miles of existing trails, the Western Slope already offers some of the best riding and hiking in Virginia—but we know it can be even better.
Why It Matters
Trails aren’t just paths through the woods—they’re community infrastructure. They connect people to nature, promote health and wellness, support local economies, and make the Shenandoah Valley a better place to live, work, and play.
The Western Slope Trail Plan is about reimagining what’s possible for outdoor recreation in the Shenandoah Valley. It’s a blueprint for the next generation of trails—built by the community, for the community.
