Age 70½ or older

Turn your required IRA withdrawal into trails, tax-free.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) sends money straight from your IRA to the Coalition. It isn't counted as taxable income, and once you're 73 it can satisfy your required minimum distribution. Your gift builds trails on public lands and safer routes for walking and biking across the Shenandoah Valley.

Why give from your IRA?

  • Lower taxable income. A QCD never shows up in your adjusted gross income, so you get the benefit even if you take the standard deduction.
  • Count it toward your RMD. From age 73, your QCD counts toward your required minimum distribution for the year.
  • Any amount helps. There's no minimum. Many donors give $500 or $1,000 a year this way.
  • Simple to set up. One request to your IRA custodian, and the money goes straight to the Coalition.

How to make a QCD in four steps

  1. Contact your custodian

Call or log in to the firm that holds your IRA (Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, etc.) and ask for a "qualified charitable distribution."

  2. Give them our details

Use the legal name, EIN, and mailing address below. The check must be made payable to the Coalition, not to you.

  3. Let us know it's coming

Custodian checks often arrive without your name. A quick email helps us match your gift and thank you.

  4. Keep your receipt

We'll send a written acknowledgment for your tax records. Tell your tax preparer the distribution was a QCD.

Tell us about your gift

Giving before December 31? Start by early December. Custodians can take one to three weeks to process a request and mail a check, and the distribution has to leave your IRA by Dec. 31 to count for 2026.

Prefer a guided online form?

Every.org can walk you through it and email you instructions to send your IRA custodian. With this option, your custodian's check goes to Every.org, which passes your gift on to the Coalition each month.

Not 70½ yet, or giving another way?

You can give stock, give from a donor-advised fund, or make a card, bank, PayPal, or Venmo gift through our secure Every.org form.

Note: an IRA distribution only counts as a QCD when your custodian sends it directly to the Coalition. Please use the steps above for IRA gifts.

Common questions

What kinds of accounts qualify?

Traditional IRAs and inherited IRAs. SEP and SIMPLE IRAs qualify only if they're no longer receiving employer contributions. 401(k) and 403(b) plans don't qualify directly, but you can roll those funds into an IRA first.

Can I deduct a QCD as a charitable contribution?

No. Because the distribution is already excluded from your taxable income, you don't also take a deduction for it. For most donors, that exclusion is worth more than a deduction, especially if you take the standard deduction.

How will it show up on my tax forms?

Your custodian will report the full distribution on Form 1099-R, usually without marking it as a QCD. On your Form 1040, you or your preparer report it as a QCD so it isn't taxed. Keep our acknowledgment letter with your records.

Can my QCD go to a donor-advised fund?

No. QCDs must go directly to an operating charity like the Coalition. Donor-advised funds and private foundations aren't eligible to receive them.

Can I write the check from an IRA checkbook?

Yes, if your custodian offers one. Just note that the distribution counts in the year the check clears, not the year you write it, so mail it early in December.

Can I name the Coalition as an IRA beneficiary instead?

Yes. Naming the Coalition as a full or partial beneficiary of your IRA is a simple way to leave a lasting gift. Your custodian can add us using the legal name and EIN above. We'd love to thank you, so please let us know if you do.

The Coalition can't give tax or legal advice. Please talk with your tax advisor or IRA custodian about your situation. Figures reflect IRS rules for tax year 2026.
