Phase 1 is Shovel Ready
The plans are done (thanks to you!), the trails are approved…and we can start building NOW. The only thing missing?
Resources: cash and volunteerism.
With a full Trails Plan approved and ready to build, new trails have never been more achievable at the Western Slope. Massanutten Resort not only approved but also provided a $75,000 donation in the form of a mix of in-kind donations.
Your support is MATCHED, and directly moves dirt.
What’s Next?
Massanutten Resort, local donors, and volunteer trail builders have already helped launch the Phase 1 campaign. Now it’s time to carry these projects over the finish line.
Phase 1 includes a premier downhill flow trail, a completed Green Loop, a climbing trail to Ravine, a dedicated jump trail, and Skills Kitchen upgrades — all designed to create something for everyone. The buildout will move at the speed of community support.
Trail Passes Matter, But They’re Not Enough
Trail passes fund maintenance – they keep the Western Slope running. But they won’t build what comes next. New trail construction will take extra support.
That’s why we’re asking the community to show up in five different ways — with donations, trail passes, volunteer hours, participation, and shared enthusiasm for the trails we all love.
There Are Five Ways to Help Build the Trails and Grow the Community
1. Gift to Phase 1 Construction
Donations above and beyond trail passes help build new trails. If you want to directly support Phase 1 construction, this is the most direct way to help move the project forward.
Massanutten Resort has already stepped up with early support through the Massanutten Match of $40,000, helping to start the largest expansion of Western Slope trails to date.
Right now is the moment for the community to step in and help bring these trails to life. Make your gift today and help unlock the match and ensure we can build phase 1 ASAP.
2. Buy a Trail Pass
Trail passes are essential – they fund maintenance and keep the Western Slope running strong. Every pass supports the trail system and helps sustain the riding, running, and hiking experience people come here for.
3. Join a Volunteer Trail Day
New trails are already under construction by dedicated volunteers. No experience necessary! Just come ready to move dirt, make memories, and help shape the future of the Western Slope.
- Thursday Dig Nights begin April 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. Sign up for Thursday Dig Nights
- The Big Day Dig is April 25. Join the Big Day Dig!
- Looking for more opportunities? See volunteer trail days and community events
You can also join group rides, runs, and activities at the Western Slope through the same event calendar.
4. Invite a Friend
Trails build community, and community builds trails! Invite someone new to ride, run, or hike the Western Slope. New visitors become new trail pass holders, new donors, new volunteers, and new trail supporters.
5. Buy a T-Shirt or Hat
Special edition Western Slope t-shirts are available until March 31, with proceeds going toward Phase 1 construction. Grab some sweet swag made by Harrisonburg’s very own Local Print House — all proceeds go to the trails!
This includes a limited edition Western Slope shirt designed by Tristan Napotnik + Dusty Burchnall.
Trails Build Community. Community Builds Trails.
Whether you give, buy a pass, volunteer, invite a friend, or wear the message, every action helps build momentum for Phase 1.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are trail passes enough to fund new trail construction?
No. Trail passes support ongoing maintenance and operations, but Phase 1 construction requires additional support through donations, volunteer labor, and community participation.
Do I need trail building experience to volunteer?
No experience is necessary. Volunteer trail days are open to anyone ready to help.
What is the best way to help right now?
The fastest ways to help are making a gift to Phase 1 construction, signing up for a trail work day, and sharing the campaign with a friend.
