SHEN-Rock: About our Wonderful Coaches

Our Coaches are what makes this team so special. We are very fortunate to have a wide array of coaches helping out with the team. Coaches include but are not limited to:

  • Jonathan Albert
  • Kevin Rogers
  • Mike Bowen
  • Travis Layman
    • Ride Leader / Assistant Coach –  I grew up in Harrisonburg and spent a lot of time on my BMX bike, mowing lawns, and trying to beat my Dad in golf. Before graduating from Harrisonburg High School, I bought a mountain bike and headed to Greenville, SC for 4 years where I met my wife Celia at Furman University. We have 2 children, Erin (16) and Nathaniel (14). I work for a local commercial construction company, Harman Construction.  When I am not working, I love spending time with my family outdoors hiking, biking, camping, or sitting around the fire pit. As a member of the Rockingham County Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition, I also enjoy advocating for safe places for people to ride their bikes.
  • Adam Williams:
    • Adam Williams moved to Harrisonburg in 2010 to attend JMU after completing active duty service in the military.  He quickly got involved with the cycling community and started exploring the trails. Adam wants to provide more youth with the chance to ride, be part of a team, and have fun. He views cycling as a lifetime activity with a chance to compete for fun at many levels. Adam recently graduated from JMU with a degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Science and a minor in Coaching Education. He has worked with local teams including Spotswood High School Cross Country as Assistant Coach, James Madison Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field as Assistant Coach, and most recently Rocktown Composite Junior MTB Team as Coach. Adam has become an experienced racer in many disciplines including Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Cyclocross, Triathlon, Trail running, & Road Running. USAC Coach Level II. • Scott Wootten:
    • unnamedS. Scott Wootten of began coaching the ShenRock riders in spring of 2015. Scott grew up here in the Shenandoah Valley and a paddling addiction drove him on a whirlwind global whitewater adventure that eventually brought him back home. While studying at Virginia Tech, he started video kayaking in West Virginia on the New & Gauley Rivers for the rafting industry. After a 3 year run with a “real job” as a professional Boy Scout, Scott transitioned back to living the dream as the coach for the Massanutten Snowboard team. When he is not on his mountain bike, he’s probably playing with his camera, editing videos or chasing the dream. Today he continues to tell stories with videos, telling stories of the cycling community here in the Friendly City. Contact Scott ([email protected])
  • Tim Richardson:hughjass
    • Tim Richardson’s Cycling passion began early. His mechanical training started by coming home from the landfill with project bikes. The bikes were dismantled then resurrected as cycle monsters and sometimes lawn sculpture. Growing up in a rural landscape forced Tim to develop creative means of keeping the bikes rolling along with a mother that supported his odd desire to have all his bikes live in his room. Tim moved to Harrisonburg in 1992 to attend JMU. He is now co-owner of Shenandoah Bicycle Company. He currently teaches cycling classes through the JMU Kinesiology department. Tim has helped SHEN-ROCK the past two seasons and is Wilderness First Aid/First Responder Certified  Contact Tim ([email protected])
