Our friends over the mountain at CAMBC (Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Association) have extended an invitation for SVBC fb-plain-lockn-logomembers to help out with one of the biggest music festivals in Virginia, Lockin’. What’s in it for you? In return for volunteering  you get a whole bunch of stuff including free camping, admission, meals, and the satisfaction of helping grow cycling.
From CAMBC member Sam Lindblom:
First, to look a the big picture why CAMBC and local cyclists are interested. The long-term goal:  Work with the Oak Ridge Estate in Nelson County to establish permanent access for mountain biking, festivals, races, etc.  Oak Ridge is a HUGE place, many thousands of acres, and they are interested in mountain biking as a destination activity there.  There are already a huge pile of ATV and moto and other 2 track and hiking paths there, but not a real marquee trail…, yet.  But they want them.  The future is bright.  http://www.oakridgeestate.com/OutdoorRecreationatOakRidge.htm
Next, the interim goal:  contribute to Lock’n, raise a little money for CAMBC, have a great time, get to know the festival organizers and the owners of the estate.  CAMBC is running what will be known as The Wheelhouse at the Lockn’ Festival.  What that means is simple:  we will run a bike valet, a simple bike repair shop, and lead beginner and intermediate rides on the property.  Specialized and RedBull are also sponsoring the Wheelhouse, and will provide tubes, swag, and likely those little cans of RedBull that scare some of us.  We are seeking volunteer for all of those things.  Note that the ride leaders need not be expert riders, but need to be there in advance of their shift to preview the route, etc.  You can also sign up to “help” with ride, rather than lead it…
Here’s the online spreadsheet where you can sign up for work volunteer shifts:  CAMBC Lock’n Volunteer Sign Up.  The dates for the festival are: September 4-7.
A few notes:
  • Volunteers get:  free admission for the day(s) they work, free camping in the Wheelhouse area, free parking, a meal voucher for each shift(s) that you work, possibly more benefits.  Its amazing, really…
  • Logistics of where to go, what to do, how to get your pass, etc will come, so hold tight on those questions for now.
  • You’ll need to come early for your shift, especially if you are working on Thursday.  We might also need folks to help on Wednesday to get stuff down there ahead of time (CAMBC trailer, etc)
  • If you sign up, be prepared to work your entire shift, and then some if needed
  • We are building a relationship with the Oak Ridge Estate and Lock’n, so we plan on hitting this out of the park, with the hope of making it better next year.
  • We need a lot of volunteers, because we simply don’t exactly know what to expect.
